How to Create a Strong Password

Most password advice is outdated. Here's what actually keeps accounts safe in 2026.

Length beats complexity

A 20-character passphrase of random words beats an 8-character symbol soup. Every extra character multiplies cracking time exponentially — aim for 16+ characters on important accounts.

Never reuse passwords

One breached site exposes every account sharing that password. Unique password per site is the single highest-impact habit.

Use a password manager

Humans can't memorize 100 unique 16-character passwords — managers can. Generate with our free password generator, store in the manager, done.

Turn on two-factor authentication

Even a perfect password can leak. 2FA (authenticator app, not SMS when possible) blocks the vast majority of account takeovers.

What about passphrases?

Four random words ('correct horse battery staple') are strong and memorable — good for the few passwords you must type, like your manager's master password.
